Artist-in-Residence at Dulwich Picture Gallery

Artists-in-residence create a new body of work which is exhibited at the Gallery as the culmination of a year-long project. The artist also plays an active teaching role, leading a series of educational activities based around his or her work.

The Gallery was delighted to have Hurvin Anderson as 2006 Artist-in-Residence. An exhibition of his work was displayed in the Linbury Room from the 16 May to 18 June 2006.

The challenge of Hurvin Anderson’s residency was to bring a global perspective to our European Collection. Anderson was born in Birmingham of Jamaican descent; he has family in Jamaica and many of his works of art find inspiration in that landscape. His career is on the cusp of the big time; having studied at Wimbledon School of Art and later at the Royal College of Art, his paintings have been attracting considerable notice. His first solo show, The Lime, was held at David Risley Gallery, London in 2003; and another exhibition took place at the Thomas Dane Gallery in 2005.

Anderson’s works are carefully constructed, using his photographs and collages of found images as inspiration. The images are often bound up with socio-economic concerns and issues surrounding his personal identity. Anderson was initially drawn to the architecture of the building and gradually worked his way inside. He has primarily chosen two works from the collection as inspiration for his show: The Roman Road after Poussin c.1648 and A View on the Rhine, by Herman Saftleven, 1656. He has transposed these works to different climes and contemporary life, yet maintains the allegorical themes of humanity's passage through the world. The results are unique and dramatic.

The award-winning Education Department at Dulwich Picture Gallery seeks to bring fine art to as wide an audience as possible and encourage personal creativity, regardless of ability or background. Anderson’s contribution to this has been greatly valued.
